Stand Density Management: Results from Research in Southern Pine

چکیده

Introduction The relationship between stand density and volume growth in southern pine species is a topic of long standing interest. Early work includes that of McClay (1955) who studied the relationship between periodic annual growth per acre and residual stand density after thinning measured as basal area. Using linear regression analysis he found a trend of increasing growth with increasing residual stand density up to a point where growth is maximized. Whether the growth levels decline beyond this point could not be determined conclusively because of a lack of data from high density stands. Similar regression analysis was performed by Wenger et al. (1958) to study the effect of growing-space requirements for thinned and unthinned natural stands of loblolly pine for a 5-year period. In thinned stands the relationship between volume growth and density varied with site quality, but not with stand age. Alternatively, both variables were significant for unthinned stands.

Southern Pine Beetle in Loblolly Pine: Simulating within Stand Interactions Using the Process Model Spblobthin

Pine stand density is a key determinant of damage resulting from attacks by the southern pine beetle (SPB, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.). High-density stands of maturing loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) are at high risk for losses to SPB, and reducing stand density is the primary tool available to forest managers for preventing and mitigating damage. Field studies are expensive and inflexible for...

Fire Ecology of Ground Vegetation in Pinus roxburghii Sargent Plantations in North-West Himalaya - Floristic Composition and Species Diversity

Effect of fire on phyto-sociology of understorey vegetation in chir pine forests of three different silvological characteristics was compared with pure grassland. 15 grasses, 1 sedge, 5 legumes and 21 non-legumes were recorded in the four study sites. Floristic composition gradually increased from June to August and then declined slowly by October in all the plots. Maximum number of species wa...

Visual Preference Models of Southern Pine Stands

Statistical models explaining students' ratings of photographs of withinstand forest scenes were constructed for 99 forest inventory plots in east Texas pine and oak-pine forest types. Models with parameters that are sensitive to visual preference yet compatible with forest management and timber inventories are presented. The models suggest that the density of sawtimber-sized trees and the prop...

Landowner and Manager Awareness and Perceptions of Pine Health Issues and Southern Pine Management Activities in the Southeastern United States

We assessed awareness and perceptions of forest landowners and managers in the southeastern United States regarding their stand health especially under the context of the southern pine decline (SPD) phenomenon. E-mail and paper surveys were sent to 4,670 forest landowners and managers in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina with an overall response rate of 28%. About half (51%) of respondents r...

Evaluating the Ecological Integrity of Structural Stand Density Management Models Developed for Boreal Conifers

Density management decision-support systems (e.g., modular-based structural stand density management models (SSDMMs)), which are built upon the modeling platform used to develop stand density management diagrams, incorporate a number of functional relationships derived from forest production theory and quantitative ecology. Empirically, however, the ecological integrity of these systems has not...
